The Department of History launched its journey in 1956 as General subject and marched ahead for pretty long time as General subject only. It obtained approval for introducing History as Honours subject in 1994. After Bengali and English, there is demand amongst students for opting History as Honours subject. There are at present 120 sanctioned seats for Honours. There are two full time teachers, One Part – time (College sponsored) teacher and two Guest Teachers in the Department. The Department has produced innumerable students both Honours and General throughout the years. Many students of the Department have established themselves in various sectors, especially as accomplished teachers in various H.S. Schools and Degree Colleges and keep touch with the Department as Alumni. The student scoring highest marks in the Honours papers in the Part – III final examination is awarded medal by the College.
Besides teaching, the Department organizes class wise seminar, debate and prepares students for Quiz competition and Group discussion, so that they can keep pace with the time. The students can express their views independently through their writing in the wall Magazine and teachers guide them properly in this regard. Above all, the faculty members are always ready to render all possible assistance and guidance to students within and outside the campus as and when required. Consequently students get through the final examination with flying colours every year and go for further higher studies.

SWOC analysis of the department and future plans.
Strength
The Department with its available infrastructure is running smoothly with good team spirit among faculty members. Demographically Dinhata being a minority and SC based Sub-Division, with poor socio economic background many students are consequently first generation learner. Under the circumstances, we leave no stone unturned to enrich the students in such a way so that they can easily keep pace with the advanced learning at an optimum level.
Weakness
The college being lone general college in entire Sub Division, we are to accommodate students beyond our bearing capacity. Therefore we have some limitations too. For e.g. 1. Our teacher student ratio is not satisfactorily for healthy class performance, especially for General Students. 2. Lack of permanent faculty for smooth running of teaching learning process. 3. Lack of Departmental library and sufficient classroom.
Opportunities
In spite of having its limitations, the department tries to render quality education, encourages and prepares students for building their higher academic career.
The department also takes initiative to make learned scholars available for the academic interest of the students as and when feasible.
Sri P. Dutta, Head of the Department tries to teach communicative Hindi and English for the interests of the students.
Challenges
The geographical location and historical importance of Cooch Behar District in particular and North Bengal in general draw the attention of many visitors notonly from different parts of our country, but from aborad too. Therefore, there lies ample opportunity for History students to choose challanging career as tourist guide besides teaching profession. We are committed to overcome the limitations and march ahead with our avowed mission and vision to make the department a centre of academic excellence.
Future plans
Educational tours to places of historical interest shall be initiated to creat hostorical interest among the students. Keeping in view on the increasing demand on regional history a seperate collection of books on the history of North Bengal shall be arranged to inculcate research interest among the students on regional history.
